Nvidia gets off to a good start, as the nForce i SLI leads the field in our memory bandwidth and latency tests. These access latency results are from our two-DIMM system configurations. With the exception of the SLI, the nForce chipsets fare particularly well with smaller step sizes. Despite its superior memory subsystem performance, the i SLI lags a little in Sphinx. WorldBench overall performance WorldBench uses scripting to step through a series of tasks in common Windows applications.
It then produces an overall score. WorldBench also spits out individual results for its component application tests, allowing us to compare performance in each. That gives it a two-point lead over the X and three points on the P, though. However, the Intel chipsets are a little faster in Premiere. The i bounces back with the fastest performances in Nero and WinZip, although the margins of victory are as slim as they come. Only the latest graphics drivers detect the board as SLI-compatible.
We also tested the i in SLI with LinkBoost enabled, and as you can see, it had virtually no impact on performance.
LinkBoost was disabled for all of our other tests. The chipset is consistently faster than the nForce SLI, though. You can read more about the issue here.
Note that the Intel chipsets have relatively slow write speeds when compared to the nForce family. Our Firewire transfer speed tests were conducted with the same external enclosure and hard drive as our USB transfer speed tests. Nvidia and other chipset manufacturers have essentially handed off responsibility for 3D audio to codec manufacturers who perform positional audio calculations in their drivers.
Analog Devices and Realtek currently dominate the codec scene, and 3D audio performance lines up along those lines. This renders some games, such as Battlefield 2, unplayable with EAX effects enabled. We used an M-Audio Revolution 7. Analog output ports were used on all systems. A crossover CAT6 cable was used to connect the server to each system.
The boards were tested with jumbo frames disabled. Users will have to choose between the two. Throughput is solid for both, as it is across the board.
After lowering the CPU multiplier to take it out of the equation, we were able to hit a maximum stable front-side bus speed of MHz. Above that speed, the board refused to post, even with higher front-side bus and north bridge voltages.
We even tried front-side bus speeds between and MHz in 20MHz increments to see if skipping to higher speeds would work, to no avail. Frustrated, we wondered if the engineering sample Core 2 Duo E we were using for testing could be the culprit, so we picked up a retail E That chip did the trick, and we were soon running our board with a blistering MHz front-side bus.
At that speed, our E was clocked at 3. Despite the fact that a MHz front-side bus is pretty exceptional for a Core 2 Duo motherboard, Nvidia suggested that higher speeds were possible, and sent us a second board for testing. With our second i board, we were able to push the front-side bus all the way up to MHz. It was perfectly stable at that speed cranking Prime95 and the rthdribl HDR lighting demo, too. Not content to limit our overclocking escapades to the front-side bus, we turned our attention to the memory.

Likewise with the MHz DDR2 memory overclock — does that mean that the memory lines are actually clocked at Mhz? Or MHz? I wonder how much the power use would drop by turning off the audio, ethernet, raid and firewire? With boards like this basically being dropped in their laps all they need to do is re-badge it and mark it up a bit.
Pretty impressive. Great layout, great stock performance, great features well, except for Realtek audio and great overclocking. What more could you want?
I look at them i guess to see where they improved some things i guess, but i never really look closely or think much of it. And crap for PCIe expansion cards to go in them. Of course if by some miracle of smaller standard coolers, or watercooling, one could have the dual GPUs only use one slot no problemo. I now know what Core 2 mobo Forge has been waiting for. This plus some seriously sick C2D action will get the frag going like nothing else out there.
