Hopefully soon! I've recently bought Ping G irons to replace my X14s. I'm still using my Cleveland Launcher Comp, and I'm contemplating on moving to a G series driver. I've searched online for comparisons and not surprisingly, I couldn't find any. Could I reasonably expect gains in terms of distance and consistency forgiveness if I switch to the G driver?
It's really hard for me to compare since there were several years and quite a few different drivers in between them for me. But my G25, G30 and now G SF Tec drivers were easily 10 yards longer and more consistently high and straight than the Titleist that I played in between the Launcher and the Pings. The total distance difference was more like 15 yards but part of that is I swing a little harder now than I used to mostly because the Ping drivers are so forgiving I can swing flat out.
That comp was a beast. I hit a friend's for a while and it really was a tank. I wouldn't expect much in terms of distance. Regarding "forgiveness" I believe it is a major step up. I hit the G on a trackman and it felt like cheating. No doubt the straightest driver I've hit. Was about 10 yards shorter than my Epic though and I am just too prideful when it comes to driver distance I guess.
I had the chance to test the G and compare it with my Launcher. The G felt a lot more natural and I thought it was perfect when I'd address. My Launcher was a bit closed so off the bat I'd have to adjust my grip to correct it. That in itself was a big thing for me in terms of fit. Granted, I was told I could use a stiff shaft for my hybrid and I needed a 5 wood, so maybe I can stick with my driver until late this year.
Just finished another week in Florida using it. Still smiling over the distance and accuracy it provides. Great driver. That's awesome! The Cleveland Launcher series was awesome - I had the and played my best golf with it. Point and shoot, and good distance and workability. Still have it! I'll probably reshaft it and give it a whirl. I played one for 12 years, and just replaced it with a RBZ.
I really had no complaint with the Launcher, but wanted to try something different. I may have gained a few yards distance, but as far as forgiveness, I'm still about the same in keeping the ball in the fairway. I have and can happily report it has unseated the Ping. Consistency, distance, feel, sound are all there for me with less thinking and tinkering.
